JUMA 2011 Autumn/Winter Unisex Collection: Sneak Preview

Brother and sister duo, Alia and Jamil Juma, have traveled to India, Tibet, Thailand, and Shenzhen (China) where they researched wildlife and local tapestry techniques.

Along with these influences, the designer duo incorporates gradients of color—midnight blue, burnt coral, olive, tangerine, nude, and black—to render the collection darker and moody.

Silhouettes and styling are directional as the video reflects the mood.

JUMA—Wearable for the West!

When I asked designer Jamil Juma about the inspiration behind the recent 2011 spring/summer collection, he wrote:

“Our inspiration for the line was drawn from Kenya, Zaire using our silhouettes from previous seasons. Kurta pants have always come from India and we made them more wearable for the western world.”

Last year in preparation for my trip to North Africa, I began a series on African fashion; so I was very excited to read Jamil’s response. (I didn’t gain my nickname Culture Vulture for nothing!)

While I covered the fashion trends of West Africa, Kenya is a country situated in East Africa with 47 countries within it! Archeological research has proven that modern man originated precisely here!

Zaire is an African nation located in the center of the continent, now called the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 250 ethnic groups and 242 languages—talk about diversity!

While many men wear western dress, traditional Kenyan menswear varied with each ethnic group, typically with vibrant colors that carried symbolic meaning. Today some men wear a kanzu (long white tunic) with a kofia (round flat cap), while smaller tribes retain their garb.

Although varying according to the tribe, Congolese men traditionally wore a piece of raffia skirt around their waist. Now westernized, many men have turned to a version of the West African dashiki.

Interestingly, there exists a sartorial subculture of Congolese “Sapeurs”—African dandies—who sport outrageously multi-colored suits. Finding its roots in the Seventies and Parisian fashion, this movement is full of Safari Soul

Well, I must say, Jamil and Alia definitely know where to find inspiration!

JUMA—Inspired by Friends Who Surround

After attending George Brown College, former model Alia Juma worked as an assistant designer at various design houses and, in 2003, founded JUMA with his sister Jamil, a graduate of McGill University.

Now based in Toronto, Canada, the brother and sister duo co-design each collection with Alia acting as design director and Jamil—creative director.

JUMA is committed to the support of numerous philanthropic foundations and activities, including the following charities: Children’s Aid Foundation, Fashioncares M.A.C Viva Glam, Through the Eyes of Women Foundation, the Center for Addiction and Mental Health, Dress Your Best, and North York General Hospital Foundation (Heart of Fashion).

Concerning the autumn/winter 2010 collection, Alia writes:

“Every season is an evolution of the previous. We’re constantly inspired by our friends who are interesting in their own ways. A lot of our friends work in the creative industry as stylists, artists, graphic designers, writers and musicians. When you surround yourself with such talented people, you tend to feed off their energy. We also like to design clothes that we want to wear ourselves. Personally I’m not into clothing that’s super trendy; I like to dress in items that are fashion forward yet understated. I like to feel comfortable yet know that I look good in what I’m wearing. I don’t want to feel fussy or like the outfit is wearing me.”

Farpitzs in Toronto...with Juma!

Alia and Jamil Juma—in one word: impressive!

Alia is a former model and graduate in Bio-systems Engineering from McGill University, who was also an assistant designer for several design houses.

Jamil worked as an investment strategist before entering the fashion industry.

In 2003, the brother and sister duo set out as co-designers and founded the contemporary clothing label Juma.

Based in Toronto, Canada, this sibling team throws a fresh twist on knitwear and jersey basics with a sporty touch that is inspired by their creative environment.

Living in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood, Alia and Jamil have reinterpreted for this season the traditional Hasidic look into a fresh, appealing shtick for urban men.

This winter, if you are planning to get dressed up, then get farpitzs with Juma!
