Borsalino Hats Go Green with Rubia® Red

Rubia® Pigmenta Naturalia has been on the cutting edge in red eco-dyes, which date back to over two millennia.

Now, thanks to Rubia®, Italian hat brand Borsalino has a Rubia® dyed hat line.

After having mastered the art of hat making in France, Alessandro Giuseppe Borsalino opened a workshop in Alessandria, Italy.

In 1857, his brother Lazzaro joined hands and the millinery legend began.

Now, more than 150 years later, Borsalino turns an eye to “green” dyes from the Netherlands as Rubia® colors their felt hats with tints of red and brown.

Soulland & the Adler Fedora Hat

With roots in both Sweden and Tanzania, 23-year-old Silas Adler was born in Denmark, having spent much of his childhood in rural Jutland, the main part of the country.

Prior to moving to Copenhagen as a teen, Silas lived several years in Gothenburg, Sweden.

At the age of 17, Silas founded the menswear label Soulland as an excuse not to go to school!

Now the best up-and-coming Danish designer, Silas combines the country lifestyle of Jutland with the urban trends of Gothenburg and Copenhagen.

The Adler fedora hat is a hybrid between a baseball cap and the classic fedora that is constructed using artisan millinery techniques.

Dedicated to Scandinavia, VMAN has launched a giveaway of two Adler Fedora Hats at 2pm today!

Kangol-—Flipping Heads for Over 70 Years

Kangol is a label that has been specializing in headwear and accessories for over70 years.

Founded in 1938 by Jaques Spreiregen in Cumbria, England, the name derives from three words: Knit + ANGor + woOL.

Originally sported by workers and golfers, Kangol berrets were also worn by the British military in WWII, most notably by General Bernard Montgomery.

In the 1980’s Kangol entered a new phase of fashion history as they were embraced by many groups with the hip-hop community.

Since then, Kangol’s flip of the coin has been “heads” all the way!

Justin Smith Esquire has a Brand New Easter Hat for You!

Milliner

Main Entry: mil·li·ner
Pronunciation: \ˈmi-lə-nər\
Function: noun
Etymology: irregular from Milan, Italy; from the importation of women's finery from Italy in the 16th century
Date: 1530
: a person who designs, makes, trims, or sells women's hats
(
Merriam-Webster Online)

The term milliner dates back to 16th-century Italy and referred to a supplier of fine luxury goods, such as hats, gloves, and other accessories for which Milan was renowned. Eventually milliners began producing or importing hats alone.

Thus, the word entered the English language from the Middle English word Milener—an inhabitant of Milan or someone who dealt with items from the city. Obviously hats date back thousands of years; however, in modern times they merely gained popularity in the 1500’s.

Justin Smith Esquire is a contemporary milliner, not only for women but also for men. In addition to millinery, Justin runs a highly successful, exclusive hairdressing salon in central London called “And People Like Us.”

Justin began designing and making hats by hand in 2000 while undertaking part-time millinery training. Since that time, Justin has obtained a MA in Millinery at the Royal College of Art, accumulating numerous awards for his millinery skills, including “Hat Designer of the Year”: first prize in 2006 and second prize in 2007.

Clearly from the photo top right, Justin draws his inspiration from the good ole' dandies from the first half of 20th-century England.

Whatever hat you sport today, I wish you a happy and healthy holiday!
