Jack Mackenroth & Andrew Werner: Shooting with Style

Models come in all shapes and sizes, but it is not often to find one with this much muscle. Models come at all ages, but it is not common to be over forty. We often interview the model, but it is less usual that the model interviews the photographer. So, here is some uncommon fun!

Reality TV Star and HIV/AIDS advocate, Jack Mackenroth, recently took part in a new photo shoot with photographer Andrew Werner. For Jack Mackenroth, working with photographer Andrew Werner is a perfect symbiotic relationship.

A decisive and quick thinker, Werner works to produce quality, stylized, and relevant photographs. He knows what he wants and has an amazing eye for what ‘works’ and what doesn’t.

“Andrew is one of the nicest, easiest photographers to work with,” says Mackenroth. “Since I just turned 41, honestly, I don’t know how many more photo shoots I have left in me, so it’s always great to work with someone you know and get along with. He understands about the importance of lighting someone who isn’t 21 anymore. It also helps that he has nice things to say about me, too.”

“Everyone knows that Jack Mackenroth has great style,” expressed Werner. ”So naturally when I arrived at our shoot, I was eager to see what the stylist had selected for the shoot. After Jack tried on several outfits, he then, in perfectly witty ‘Jack style’ asked me, ‘Clothes on or off?’ I instantly knew this would be a fun few hours. Our plan was to capture drama, depth, and beauty.

“Jack’s open, vibrant personality led him to comfortably run around half-naked; which gave me a great opportunity to share the different sides of one man with the rest of the world. My vision was to capture Jack’s unique essence and energy through my lens; a man who has not only been HIV-positive for over 20 years, but a man who is a sex symbol, and more importantly a role model for the entire gay community.”

It goes without saying, then, that Mackenroth and Werner make a great team and produce some of the best work together. Mackenroth added, “As a designer myself, it’s a leap of faith for me to hand over creative control to someone else. With Andrew it was cool because he allowed me to help edit the photos and be a part of the entire creative process.”

Raphael Hauber & the Reality of Ausbau

AUSBAU—used often in relation to construction—is to develop and/or expand with the goal of improvement. In this 2009 a/w collection, designer Raphael Hauber and photographer Heinz Peter Knes expand their disciplines to construct an abstract art form that is free from any association of reality with symbols.

For Raphael, he cuts the photographs to the point that they can no longer lay claim to picturing reality. Such fragmentation allows the pictures to free themselves and assume their own reality—a sense of Concrete Art, the abstractionist movement of the 1930’s in which lines and colors are “concrete” in themselves.

For Heinz, the cutting is like challenging a sacred cow. But the cuts, shreds, and holes also symbolize the end of an era in analog photography, which has been supplanted by digital photography—a transition that he contrasts to the emergence of electronic music, from analog to digital. In the collection, therefore he incorporates a layer of each into every image.

Heinz Peter Knes was born 1969 in Gemünden am Main of Bavaria, Germany. Now based in Berlin, the photographer has been published in numerous magazines since graduating from Fachhochschule Dortmund in 1999. Although at times considered a fashion photographer, Heinz rejects the label in that he is captivated by everything that surrounds the clothing.

Born in 1977, Raphael Hauber studied clothing technology at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and Fashion Design at the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences. Raphael founded his epynomous label in 2003 and is currently based in Eppelheim, southwest Germany.

Carolyn Massey: Snapshots of a “Gentleman”

Son of a carpenter who labored in the mining industry, August Sander was born 1876 in Herdorf, Germany. While working in a local mine himself, August began assisting a photographer, who was working for a mining company, and soon purchased equipment for his own darkroom. After military service and brief wanderings about Germany, August set up shop in Linz and then in Cologne.

By the 1920’s August had joined the Group of Progressive Artists, documenting modern society in his photographs. He travelled extensively, taking 40,000 photos by the time of his death in 1964. August Sander is best known for his portraits as seen in the series People of the 20th Century.

It’s nearly impossible not to feel inspired by the Sander’s series as is 28-year-old British designer, Carolyn Massey.

Graduating with an MA from the Royal College of Art in 2005, Carolyn launched her menswear label in London a year later, establishing a sartorial code of what it means to be a gentleman in times of social and civil unrest.

Drawing deep inspiration from August Sander’s portraits, Carolyn Massey captures the dignity of men in times of war, migration, and poverty, who “make do” with whatever garments are available to them.
