Mary Katrantzou Spring 2011 Collection

Home is where the heart is.

Mary Katrantzou has, in the past, looked at perfume bottles and blown glass to inspire her collections. She's taken an even grander starting point this time, displaying a collection of dresses with images of room interiors literally ripped from the pages of Architectural Digest and The World of Interiors. This makes for a slightly more gimmicky collection, as evidenced by the chandelier necklaces, which are quite literally chandeliers. Her trompe l'oeil stylings can be quite jarring and even thought-provoking, as well as uniquely beautiful. Some of the embellishments get to be a bit much, such as the valance-like shoulder pieces and lampshade skirts beaded with Swarovski crystals. It's not woman as a object but woman as place; a strange statement but one that actually works on a couple of these dresses, especially when the graphics are slightly more abstract.
