2011 Palm Springs Gala

Girl, go on and get your coffee. We've got ripping to do.

Darlings, it was the 22nd Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala! That thing you're all hearing about right now for the very first time in your lives! Hit it, stars!

Natalie Portman in Vionnet Spring 2011

It's a little bit "Barbra accepting her Funny Girl Oscar" crossed with "Liza when her mother was alive." Seriously. We don't know exactly why she decided to do a salute to gay icons, but there it is. Unfortunately, it's not making us love it. Despite the references to fabulous divas, she still looks like a middle-aged secretary circa 1980. We may have to do a IWWHG feature with her because for such a pretty girl, she rarely achieves anything more than "better than average" on the RC.

Amy Adams in Narciso Rodriguez

We're just not loving this on her. It just feels too much like she's trying to prove she lost her pregnancy weight. And judging from the side shots, she did. Congrats on that, honey. But the dress looks too tight and like it's pulling in different directions. We also don't think she can pull of that Deneuve-esque blowout she's got going on up top. The shoes are pretty hot, though.

Carey Mulligan in Prada

Ah, yes. A return to form for our little Brit princess. Simple and feminine bordering on twee is where she should remain for the time being. It's her look and she never looks as good as when she's working it. We love the textural quality of this dress, as well as the silhouette, which flatters her. The hair's looking decent too, for the first time in a while. Since the dress is relatively plain and the hair is short, we would have recommended some showy earrings. Nothing dangly; just something that you can see from halfway across the room.

Helen Mirren in Zac Posen

We will start off by saying this: Helen Mirren is a creature for whom rules do not apply. In her sixties, she can rock a bikini, a skin-tight dress and now, JBF hair. Face it: the bitch is scorching hot and age has done nothing to change that. If anything, she's gotten hotter. Having said all that, while we are impressed with both her body (SERIOUSLY, girl) and her shapewear, this sad, heavy-looking dress is not helping her. That horrific mermaid hem (which looks good on exactly no one) looks like it's pulling the whole dress down, as if she was a literal mermaid and just hauled herself dripping wet out of the ocean to attend this event. Helen, we love you and we want to spend an afternoon with you smoking joints and going through your closet while you tell us stories about your co-stars, but we can't support this dress. More importantly, YOU can't support this dress.
