We had to talk this one out quite a bit before writing this post. See, we love this dress. We even love it on her. We just think one needs to make some concessions when one is not a 20-year old model and wearing this dress. It's a deliberately retro style and if you're not careful, you can look a little too retro yourself. That hem length isn't always easy to pull off without looking a little dowdy. As much as we love a classic pair of black pumps that was not the way to go with this look. It's too literal. And while we wouldn't say this was a wrong choice per se, when one is a busty gal planning on showing off some cleavage, then one should consider both the width and the placement of straps, should there be any. Wide straps set wide apart can make a busty gal look even bustier than she intended. And finally, as with the shoes, the hair and makeup should have been considered better in reference to the dress. The red lip and pony tail are, again, too literally retro. Something a little more modern in the above-the-neck styling would have helped a lot here. She gets an IN because it's a great dress and it suits her; but she gets points taken off for some unimaginative styling. The T Lo rule is, if the dress is classic to the point of retro, then you really need to make the shoes, hair and makeup say 2010 as loudly as they can. Otherwise, you're entering costume territory. Worse, because pre-1970 styles do tend to make women look older than they are (see: any of the Mad Men actresses out of costume).
And we're not such bitches that we're gonna take points off because the top rode up a little (or the seam split) and you can see a patch of skin at her belly. It happens.
In other news, this bitch is closing in on 40 and looks pretty much like she did when she was 15.
