In or Out: Natalie Portman in Jason Wu

"Hello! Can I talk to you for a moment about my purse?"

Natalie Portman attends the 35th Annual Toronto International Film Festival premiere of 'Black Swan' in Toronto, Canada in a Jason Wu chiffon dress paired with a black Christian Dior clutch.

God, stylists are sheep, aren't they? "Black pumps! Someone said black pumps are in! We have to get her a pair OF BLACK PUMPS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!" Repeat with "nude shoe." In a couple of months, it'll be something like "beaded bag" or "spaghetti straps" or some other completely arbitrary thing that everyone on the red carpet will show up wearing at the same time. Yes, the black pump is back, and y'know? Despite our bitchery, we love it. It's a classic and it can look both sexy and kickass at the same time.

Oh, right. She's wearing a dress, isn't she? Well, let's talk about that. Pretty as she is, Natalie doesn't always bring it to the RC the way she should. In a way, it's endearing, because she gives off the vibe of a too-serious girl with her head in the books, suddenly thrust in front of a wall of cameras against her will. She always looks like she has no idea how she got there. Anyway, the dress is very pretty and it suits her, as well as being something of a visual callback to the title of the movie. The bag is Dior, of course. Gotta meet those contractual obligations. She's not exactly being subtle as she presents it to the camera. Some day soon, starlets will have so many promotional obligations as it pertains to their borrowed outfits that they'll all look like the girls on The Price is Right on the red carpet, smiling and pointing to their merchandise. It's only a matter of time before one of them wheels a refrigerator out on the carpet. She should just hold the bag over her head and scream "J'ADORE DIOR!" for the full effect. The cuff she's wearing, with the little bow? That we do not like. Very twee, bordering on tacky. Hair looks good, makeup's a little heavy, but then again, that's the way the wind is blowing trend-wise. In another season, every woman on the red carpet's gonna look like she just got back from a cocaine break in the ladies room at Studio 54 with Halston.

Still, the overall presentation is good. She's an IN.
