As you are probably aware, early in each season, by the time you get to the end of the week, you forget a lot of the designs that walked the runway in the previous episode. We took one look at this look and said, "Hey, that's actually pretty good. Why didn't he get Judge Love for it?" Then we realized we couldn't remember what his starting garment was.
Oh. Well, that's not quite so impressive.
Which isn't to say he didn't do the work, but from a design perspective it could hardly be said that he redesigned anything. He made a dress out of a very similar dress.
Still, we like the collar. It's really the only point of interest.
And it all seems to fit her well. Plus we see no obvious technical issues.
It's a good thing he made something attractive and stylish, because if he'd made something ugly out of it, the judges would have criticized him for not going far enough in re-imagining the original item. Safe from a design perspective, but notable from style perspective.Valerie:
Yikes.
While it's clearly a bit of a mess, we think she made just about as many good decisions as bad here. First, she was smart to use so much of the fabric from Casanova's pants, because it's high quality and has a sturdiness to it.
Second, she did some really interesting things with seaming and pleating in the skirt. It really raises the interest level. We're not entirely sold on keeping the men's waistband and not utilizing some sort of belt with it, though.
But the rest of her fabrics strikes us as pretty poor choices; too flimsy and wrinkly, and poorly utilized to boot. But the real story is WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH THAT BODICE? Those aren't cups; they're exclamation points for boobs.
That hem is atrocious. The little zipper detail looks sad.
And we're really not sure what's going on with the back there. Is it supposed to fit like that?Sarah:
Believe it or not, we like this quite a bit.We don't love rompers by any stretch, but she had a men's shirt to work with and she chose to use very little complementary fabric, so she made a smart choice at the outset. It's much more impressive when the bones of the original outfit are easy to see.
Plus, there is a LOT of detail on this thing. Look at all that seaming.
And the fit is pretty amazing, considering she only met her model that day and she only had 5 hours to turn a men's shirt into this.
Although the darts in the bust look a little sloppy and those pockets should have been merely decorative because they stick out too much.
Plus we kinda dig the retro, Rosie the Riveter styling. We wouldn't have predicted this, but she's really one to watch. She's got the technical skills, the point of view, and the sense of style.
