Shelley O: Skirting the Issue

Let's play First Lady Barbie!

First lady Michelle Obama visits the Treasury
Department in Washington, DC. to thank the staff for their service.

It's just not working for us. We're mentally editing that outfit and keep running into roadblocks. Should the skirt sit lower? Should the hem be lower? Should she have paired it with a color instead of all white up-top? Should she have skipped the little jacket since it's been 90+ on the eastern seaboard for over a week now? Especially since she's been known to bare her arms in February? Should she ditch the silver belt? Should she have scrapped the skirt completely because it seems to be the root of all her problems here?

Look, it's not an awful outfit. In fact, given its simplicity you'd think there'd be a lot less room for things to go wrong. It seems to us that the skirt simply isn't meant to be worn that high and it's causing us to question something. We constantly hear that she wears her skirts and belts so high because she's so high-waisted, but we look at this and all we can think is how much better she'd look if the skirt sat at least a few inches lower.

In fact, here's our mental edit: have the skirt sit a few inches lower on her waist (hem the bottom if it's too long for that), ditch the belt, ditch the jacket and wear a fitted, but not tight blouse either in black or in some color that compliments the busy skirt.

There. That's our solution. Your turn to play First Lady Barbie. What would you change about this outfit? Don't say "ditch the skirt." The outfit IS the skirt. Pretend the First Lady is insisting on the skirt.
