Shelley O: Hooray for the Red, White, and Blue

Why can't Wonder Woman wear THIS?

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at Independence Day festivities on the South Lawn of the White House, July 4, 2010 in Washington, DC. The Obamas honored the families of military service members at a barbecue and called for the nation to celebrate civil rights and the spirit of America.

If you've been reading us for a while, then you know we're cranky little bitches with our own rules about How Things Should Be Done. To that ever-growing list, we add the following pet peeve. You know how on certain holidays, some cheerful pain in the ass appoints herself the color police and goes around questioning everyone with "It's Saint Patrick's Day! Where's your green?" or "It's Valentine's Day! Where's your red?" or the most common, "It's Independence Day! Where's your red, white and blue?" You know what we always say to these people? "Where's your FACE?" Then we throw whatever we're drinking in their face and stomp away in search of more fabulous, less annoying people to share our air.

This is our way of saying that we always deliberately AVOID wearing the socially expected colors on any given holiday because we're total rebels, flipping our fingers at convention. Earth tones at Christmas! Pastels on Thanksgiving! Jewel tones at Easter! And whatever the hell is clean and makes us look thin on the 4th of July! We just don't get into the whole red, white and blue thing on 7/4, mainly because it's kind of hard to make those colors all work in one outfit without looking like a superhero or a kindergarten classroom.

The First Lady probably doesn't have the option of saying "HELL, no" to flag colors on a holiday like this. Thankfully, Shelley had enough sense to: a) studiously avoid both stars and stripes, b)pick an off-shade blue that doesn't remind you of a flag, and c)add little pops of black to give the look a more modern feel.

She looks adorable. Perfect for the event and the day; summery and chic. Love the sleek hair and giant hoops.

And we have to point out that she looks fantastic in a halter. It should be her go-to neckline.
