Styling Short Hair Updos

Short Hair Updos You Can Do

An updo, in the simplest terms, is styling your hair in such a way that some or all of it are fastened to the back of your head. Over the years, different variations of the updo has made waves - a woman can wear a half-updo (in which a small clump of hair is fastened at the back of one's head while the rest fall as luxurious tresses down her back) or a complete and classic updo, as popularized by such big stars like Audrey Hepburn and Jennifer Lopez.

The updo has graced many a prom, homecoming, and other major events all over the world. When we see celebrities walking down that illustrious red carpet to claim their prize, we can see their pulled from their face into an intricately designed bun at the back of their head - all the more to show their pretty faces and highlight their features. In fact, simply pulling the hair from your face to create a ponytail lends an entirely different look on you. If you add complex designs such as braiding (sometimes called the "warrior" look), you show an entirely different facet of yourself.

Long Hair vs. Short Hair

Many people think that in order to pull of an updo, you need time to grow your hair long so you can wind and twist it according to your desires. While it is true that long hair provides much room for the stylist to work, tresses that extend all the way to the back may be impractical for some, especially today when our fast-paced world barely allots us time to tame the wild mane into something that looks presentable.

Short hair definitely has its advantages. For one, it is usually cut and styled in such a way that it requires little to no maintenance. You can simply wash your hair and let the wind dry it on your way to work and it will still look beautiful. You also don't have to buy various accessories such as pins and hair ties to pull the hair from your face to make you appear and feel fresher throughout the day. Long hair can trap heat, especially if it is not tied back. During these hot summer days, long hair would definitely seem impractical.

Styling Short Hair Updos

For women who wear their hair short but still want an updo, there is no need to fret. Stylists have already created various updos that take advantage of your hair's lack of length. In addition, since it does not require intricate braiding or winding, less time is required to pull your hair back style it.

However, in both long and short hair updos, preparation is required in order for you to pull off the look you want. Usually, short hair updos have one general characteristic: your hair is curled first using a curling iron or rollers to create beautiful, wanton waves that add volume and style to your hair. After preparing your hair for the updo, all you need is a little bit of creativity and you're all set.

Basic Short Hair Updos

For women with short hair, instead of trying in vain to gather your hair into one ponytail in preparation for your updo, consider using a lot of elastic instead. Section your hair into clumps, and fasten each clump with elastics close to each other at the back of your head. You may have to use 6 to 10 elastics. Use bobby pins to fasten these elastics to each other to create one big bun. You can sculpt each clump in such a way that it fans out, thus concealing the pins and elastics you used. In addition, If you choose elastics whose color blends into your hair, many people won't even know you ‘cheated' your way to a ponytail. Remember that this may take some time and practice, so be patient and try it out before the big day.

Another way to take advantage of your short hair is to abandon the notion that you can create an elegant, classic bun that can only be applicable to long hair. After curling your hair, spritz on some hairspray on a flat comb and run it through your hair, about an inch from your scalp. By doing this, your curls will be somewhat concentrated in an area at the back of your head, and you can keep your baby bangs from falling on your face.

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize
Finally, remember that hair accessories are abound and you can always buy some for your own use. The luxury of putting accessories does not only belong to people with long hair. You can use a variety of stone-encrusted barrettes to highlight your look. In the second updo described above, you can put a wide, shiny headband that goes around your head and surrounds your curls. Now that is something that people with long hair will have difficulty pulling off!
